Vision Correction for Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a very common eye condition that affects both your distance and close vision, resulting in double or blurry vision, head aches, and eye strain. Fortunately, our Winnipeg eye care team can help correct your astigmatism so that you can see clearly and comfortably.

What Causes Astigmatism, and How Is It Treated?

In a normal, healthy eye, the clear layer at the front of your eye (known as the cornea) is a uniform, round shape. This allows it to bend light evenly as it enters the eye, creating a sharp, clear image of what you see as it reaches the photosensitive tissues at the back of your eye, known as the retina.

Astigmatism occurs when your cornea becomes misshapen, giving your eye more of an elliptical shape, like a football. This causes light to bend unevenly, scattering it and creating multiple or blurry images as it reaches the retina.

If you have astigmatism, you actually require two different prescriptions for each eye because of the oval shape of the cornea. This requires more specialized glasses or contact lenses and a more involved process for prescribing and fitting the lenses.

Our Winnipeg eye care and eyewear team has years of experience helping patients deal with astigmatism and prescribing glasses and contacts that allow for clear, comfortable vision every day.

Detection and Treatment of Cataracts

Cataracts are a common eye condition that often happens as a person gets older. They occur as a result of the clear lens inside our eyes becoming cloudy due to hardening proteins inside the eye. They tend to develop slowly, reducing the amount of light that can get through the lens, and resulting in significant vision loss. If cataracts go untreated, they can completely block light from entering the eye, resulting in blindness in the affected eye.

Conditions such as diabetes, overexposure to ultraviolet light, or complications after eye surgery are all thought to accelerate the development of cataracts, resulting in earlier formation and vision loss. Bad habits such as smoking and eating poorly are also thought to contribute.

As part of your comprehensive eye exam, our eye doctor will take a look at your eyes and determine if a cataract may be forming. If so, we may refer you to a trusted cataract surgeon who can replace your clouded lens with a new intra-ocular lens that will help you see more clearly.

Platinum system

A slit-lamp imaging system is a communication tool for use with four distinct audiences: Patients. When was the last time you saw a patient and thought, “I wish you were making better decisions about your health!” When you show a photo and say “I’m concerned about” something, the patient immediately attaches more importance to the discussion. Your future self. If you see 400 patients between initial presentation and first follow-up, you’re probably not going to remember exactly what you saw originally. When you have a photo from the initial visit and a photo from the follow-up visit, you can easily assess the rate of change of the condition. You now have evidence for changing the treatment plan, or for keeping it the same. Use the photos to efficiently and clearly communicate with the patient. Colleagues in your office. In a multi-provider office it is sometimes necessary to see someone else’s patient for a follow-up visit. Wouldn’t you like to have a photo from the previous visit? Similarly, when someone sees your patient for a follow-up, wouldn’t you like to have a photo from that visit when you see the patient again? Images and videos help to provide continuity of care. Other eye care professionals. When you’re sending a patient to someone else, also send a photo so the doctor knows what it looked like at the start. When sending a report back to a referring doctor, include a photo so the primary care doctor knows what you did. Professional communication creates future referrals.

Cirrus 4000

The ZEISS Cirrus HD-OCT 4000 (Cirrus HD-OCT or Cirrus) enable examination of the posterior and anterior of the eye at an extremely fine spatial scale, without surgical biopsy or even any contact with the eye. The Cirrus HD-OCT builds on and refines the retinal imaging technology first introduced with the ZEISS Stratus OCT™. HD-OCT stands for "high-definition optical coherence tomography." Employing the advanced imaging technology of spectral domain optical coherence tomography, Cirrus HD-OCT acquires OCT data about 70 times faster (27,000 vs. 400 A-scans per second) and with better resolution (5 μm vs. ~10 μm axial resolution in tissue), compared to first-generation OCT technology. Cirrus acquires whole cubes of OCT image data, composed of hundreds of line scans, in about the same time as Stratus acquires a six-line scan. You can view these data cubes in three planes, or through three dimensions, giving you access to an extensive amount of retinal image data in one scan. Intended Use The Cirrus HD-OCT with Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL), Macular, Optic Nerve Head, and Ganglion Cell Normative Databases is indicated for in-vivo viewing, axial cross-sectional, and three-dimensional imaging and measurement of anterior and posterior ocular structures.
